Ascot United 0-2 Westfield
Their opponents - The ‘Yellamen’ - were looking to end a drought of 3 league games without a win, but it was a nightmare start as Devonte Webster Swack won a penalty in the 4th minute to give the visitors a chance at an early lead.
However, the usually clinical Manolis Gogonas put the penalty just wide of the mark to give the visitors a very big let off. This didn’t deter the Field though, as they very nearly again took the lead, with a game of penalty pinball finding the feet of Michael O’Connor, who thought he had tapped home his first goal for the club, only to see the linesman had flagged for offside.
With all these chances, it felt only inevitable that The Field would score the opener, and it finally fell to top goalscorer Finn Evans to do it, as Tom Dryer slipped a brilliant through ball into him, which he slotted cooly into the bottom corner from a tight angle, to delight the strong travelling contingent.
Indeed, there was almost time for a second before half time as Dryer tried a shot from a tight angle, which was parried by Ascot ‘keeper Kie Plumley into the path of Evans, who finished well, but the linesman again came to Ascot’s rescue and chalked it off for offside.
The second half saw a change in pace, with Ascot having much of the ball and the better chances, but they just could not find the back of the net. In fact, there best chance of the game fell two minutes into injury time, as a corner was floated into the area, which was cleared well by Nutbeam, with his clearance finding new signing Elliot York, who pumped it up the field to Evans, who flicked it over to Ndombe, who rounded the keeper and finished well to secure all three points.
